Nguyen reportedly told police he did not see Lewis until it was too late, and that he tried to swerve to avoid striking him. Lewis and his bike were hit by the right side of Nguyens vehicle.

Lewis was taken by ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, and he reportedly died there on an operating table. Its unknown why Lewis was stopped in the traffic lane.

Beaverton police have released the name of the driver involved in a crash that killed a 47-year-old bicyclist on Southwest Tualatin Valley Highway Saturday evening.

The problem I have is that so many drivers dont drive a reasonable and prudent speed for the conditions. How many times are you in a thick fog bank (cant see 10) and some car blows by you at 70mph?

There were no traffic impediments at the time of the crash, and there is a bike lane to the right and along the curb of the traffic lane where Lewis was stopped. Police said Lewis had a working red light on the back of his bike, but was not wearing a helmet.

Of course now that you forced me to, I had to point out how this whole weepy story is inappropriate on so many levels.

Inappropriate on so many levels. Someone died and someone etoyota priuslse has to live with the knowledge they killed someone. Have an ounce of respect.

And you dont seem to understand that there are several traffic deaths every day that involve only cars. So, people in cars are dying every day.

toyota priusBeaverton ptoyota priusBeaverton police release name of driver involved iolice release name of driver involved i,James Nguyen, 48, of Beaverton, was driving his Toyota Prius westbound on the highway near the intersection with Southwest Tualaway Avenue, when he struck Michael Bret Lewis, of Beaverton, from behind, police said. The crash occurred about 6:45 p.m., after police say Lewis stopped for no apparent reason in the traffic lane of the highway.

It may also be that in that area, the bike lane jumps from being along the curb to being between the right turn land and the through traffic lane back to along the curb. It can be disconcerting if you are not used to the area. The change over in the bike lane is not marked with dashed lines, it is suddenly in a different spot as you go through an intersection. The police statement did not clearly describe the bike lane situation in that area of TV Hwy or where the cyclist was when hit.

It was dark, windy and heavily raining at the time of the crash, police said.

You also need a good, working front light — to ride in near total darkness, which also might explain why he rode into a traffic lane from a bike lane, and then stopped for no apparent reason, which is the normal reaction when one cant see where one is going.

Nguyen has fully cooperated with police during the investigation, said Pam Yazzolino, Beaverton police spokeswoman. He will not be cited, she said.

But I DID! I didnt mention the fact that his death was his own fault. Or that if he had been driving a car he would still be alive.

Toyota China’s line up. The previous generations found a good consumer in the middle aged first time buyers segment, but the revised version shown above will most certainly appeal to a younger crowd.

Toyota said if dealers confirm a fuel leak, they will replace the gasket between the sensor and the delivery pipe, and tighten the sensor. There will be no charge to vehicle owners for inspections and repairs.

In December, Toyota agreed to pay $32.4 million in fines to the U.S. government to settle a probe in the handling of two recalls. It had already paid a $16.4 million fine earlier to U.S. authorities but faced no penalties in Canada.

Now, they formally recall the vehicles and tell the world that they still have quality issues. Instead of creating an image of being responsive to technical issues with their product, they reinforce the image that there is still a problem.

But Stephen Beatty, Toyotas managing director, said the company cant sell new vehicles without properly taking care of existing customers.

Furthermore, Toyota is recalling several thousand trucks made by subsidiary Daihatsu Motor Co. over a problem with a metal part that attaches a spare tire to the bottom of the vehicle. The tire could loosen and fall on the road, Toyota said.

The company paid millions of dollars in fines in the U.S. but none in Canada

Meanwhile, U.S. safety regulators opened a preliminary investigation into a potential problem with studs (screws that secure a wheel to a vehicle) on 2010 Ford Fusion models earlier this week. A fracture could cause loss of vehicle control.

In the aftermath of last years recalls which ranged from sticky accelerator pedals to electronic stability controls, the company said it would address problems quicker and communicate better.

Lexus dealers will inspect the vehicle for fuel leakage and if there is none, they will tighten the fuel pressure sensor with the proper torque.

The latest notices are part of a broader Toyota recall of 1.7 million vehicles around the world to chetoyota recallck for three potential problems in cars and trucks, the company said.

Toyota said it is unaware of any accidents here because of improper installation of the sensors.

Toyota Canada, which is trying to recover from a dent to its longstanding reputation for quality and durability, took another hit Wednesday when the company sent notices to owners of 11,700 Lexus luxury cars about possible fuel leaks.

The recall affects certain 2006-2007 Lexus GS 300/350 mid-size sedans; 2006-2009 IS 250 and 2006-2008 IS 350 sports sedans.

The company said the sensors could loosen over time because of insufficient tightening to some fuel delivery pipes.

Its sales slid 16 per cent in Canada last year while most rivals bounced back with strong gains after the deep recession.

Toyota appears to be run by lawyers who are terrified of another legal case, said industry watcher Dennis DesRosiers about more potential costly resolutions to lawsuits or regulator concerns. In a previous life, the Lexus side of this would have been handled by a service bulletin and nobody would have even known about it.

toyota recalToyota recalls more vehicles,The automaker announced it will conduct a voluntary recall of three 2006-2009 mid-size sedans heretoyota recalToyota recalls more vehicles to inspect whether the company improperly installed fuel pressure sensors that could eventually cause leaks.

Toyota Canada officials said the recalls have hurt sales but pointed to other factors such as a market shift from smaller models the companys core strength currency fluctuations and higher incentives by rivals for the decline.

Despite the problems and subsequent damage in consumer confidence, Toyota has remained the worlds No.1 automaker for three years.

The company initiated 17 voluntary recalls involving more than 700,000 vehicles.

If loosening occurs, fuel could leak past a gasket used in the connection between the sensor and delivery pipe and through the treaded portion of the sensor, Toyota added.

Toyotas new sales in Canada including the Lexus luxury brand plunged 16.2 per cent to 171,972 in 2010.

The overall recall affects vehicles primarily in Japan where the company is sending notices to owners of 1.3 million models regarding concerns about fuel leaks.

Some analysts say Toyota is entrenching negative perceptions with unnecessary recalls and therefore needlessly hurting sales.

But production jumped 43 per cent to 458,729 cars and trucks in Cambridge and Woodstock.

It is Toyotas first recall this year and follows 17 notices in Canada involving more than 700,000 vehicles in 2010 that damaged the companys image and contributed to a significant drop in sales.

A Year to Forget

Toyota has set up teams to tackle customer concerns and rectify them quicker around the world

In addition to the possible leaks in cars in Japan and North America, the company is checking sedans and station wagons in Europe and New Zealand for irregular work on fuel pipes which may cause cracks and holes. The company has also found the problem in some models in Japan.

“I don’t think it’s necessarily biting into our sales,” he said. “We are very cautious that we don’t have a bloated pipeline of products because we’re not going to chase it with incentives. ” In mid-January, Toyota President Akio Toyoda said the company could move some production away from Japan because of the strong yen.

About two-thirds of the Toyota brand vehicles are produced in North America, which makes it less exposed to the strong yen as far as offering value to U.S. consumers than Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus or its youth-oriented brand Scion, Lentz said. Less than 45 percent of Lexus lineup sold in the United States is made in North America, and none of the Scion brand vehicles are made in North America.

The question is once the incentives start, where do they end? Toyota, the analyst notes, has pledged to offer incentives that “will be leading the market” to win back share lost to high-profile recalls in 2010. GM also has ample motivation to keep sales momentum strong, with lead shareholder the U.S. Treasury needing an average price of $53 — 49% above its current $35.60 — to break even on its bailout of the automaker.

Not so Super RugbyDan Nicholl cant help but feel that the Super 15 is designed to favour the Australian sides.

And Mitchell’s response to defeat was the most telling enforcement of the new Lions: refusing to indulge the plaudits for running the champions so close, the Kiwi coach instead rebuked his team for losing focus, and laid down a marker for his expectations. Four point defeat to the most dominant side in the competition in recent years? Still a home defeat, in Mitchell’s eyes, and that’s unacceptable.

And New Zealand? It’s a fascinating year for Super Rugby here, as players vie for a World Cup berth, teams look to spur on the country ahead of the tournament, and selectors hope that the intensity of derbies doesn’t lose them key All Blacks later in the year — a situation South Africans are all too familiar with. The return of Tana Umaga, hoping for a late Skinstad-like return to World Cup contention, and the suspension of Ma’a Nonu (one game; Bakkies Botha or Schalk Burger would have six months in solitary confinement) headlined the individual stories from the weekend, but it was the breathtaking Blues-Crusaders game that defined the opening weekend, and reminded the world of just how electric rugby in New Zealand can be.

iafrica.comtoyota austr,Tank Lanning, iPad in one hand and Black label in the other, summed up the thoughts of the local rugby community perfectly on Twitter on Saturday as the Crusaders and Blues gave a thunderous welcome to Super Rugby after a muted start on Friday. Watching two sides brimming with talent and intent collide majestically, Tank pointed out the key failing of the new format: that the conference system means South African teams could well miss out on playing the Blues or Crusaders in the regular season. And while avoiding a trip to Auckland or Christchurch might have some appeal, given the form of both sides on Saturday, what true rugby fan doesn’t want to see his or her side line up against the competition’s best?

John Mitchell was at my table at the Sports Industry Awards dinner last week, and he made it clear that he believed the Lions would win Saturday’s game against the Bulls; not a belief borne of arrogance, but rather the conviction of a man who feels he has a squad that can genuinely win big matches. A stroke of fortune and a more assured boot from Elton Jantjies, and there could very well have been an unexpected result at Coca Cola Park; the Bulls scraped home, but the Lions have made it clear that they’re a team reborn this year.

Birth certificates no barSeveral players have chosen not to represent the country of their birth at the Cricket World Cup.

Elsewhere? The Waratahs looked as good as the Rebels looked out of their depth; but as Melbourne’s side must surely improve (Danny Cipriani’s season could be crucial for the Rebels, particularly with Stirling Mortlock in support), so the Waratahs need to avoid their penchant for burning out after a bright start. None of the other three Australian sides made grand statements of intent either way in week one; overall, 2011 is about Australia convincing us that they can support five Super Rugby teams.

It’s only a week, though, and given the sheer length of the tournament in its new guise, there’s an awful lot still to happen; retaining our interest is probably the competition’s central challenge. Regular international clashes instead of amped-up Currie Cup matches would certainly help to keep Super Rugby exciting; with the Australians having successfully reinvented the competition to their own advantage, we’ll have to make the best of what will hopefully be a short-lived version of the tournament.

Past champs dominate teamPast champs the Bulls, Crusaders and Blues dominate the first instalment of our Team of the Week.

Four points for a bye, a Lions team that’s decidedly dangerous, the usual rules for Kiwis when it comes to suspensions, and a New Zealand derby that lit up week one: much to discuss after Super Rugby’s opening salvo for 2011. But for all the up and downs of the first seven games, one overriding point was made during the first weekend of the new competition: South African rugby’s been short-changed by the new Australia-friendly format.

);a.document.write(document.getElementById(printImage).innerHTML); a.document.write(document.getElementById(headPrint).innerHTML);a.document.write(document.getElementById(articleBodyPrint).innerHTML);a.document.write(

It’s the most disappointing aspect of a drawn out reinterpretation of the competition singularly designed to help Australian rugby; you can’t fault John O’Neill for successfully mugging our rugby executive, but you can bemoan the failure of rugby’s local guardians for not making a stand iafrica.comtoyota austragainst Super Rugby’s pro-Wallaby toyota australiabias, particularly when South Africa contributes most to the television deal and the viewing numbers. Not much to be done in 2011, alas, other than watch the tournament unfold — and there, at least, is cause for greater cheer.

function print_go() { var a = window.open(,,width=720,height=820,scrollbars=yes); a.document.open(text/html);a.document.write(

Still an away victory, too, seeing the Bulls off to a winning start, and while it might have been close, the Lions’ results later this year will demonstrate the value of that first win for a team that will again carry South African hopes. The Sharks look promising, but a little light in the backs, and the Cheetahs, backed at the last minute by Toyota, look set for their perennial struggle with depth. The Stormers? Four points in the bag without having played a game, thanks to a system that gets you on the board every time you have a bye; the opener against the Lions will be revealing, as the highs of last year’s final are replaced by the realities of a long competition ahead. Peter Grant’s return from Japan is key, and if the front row gels, it could be another good year in the Cape.
